He stopped.
Grace looked at Declan.
Declan’s expression sharpened.
Grace continued softly.
“So how did you know where the money went?”
Silence.
Longer this time.
Then Ethan said, “Because Vanessa told me.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“Before or after federal agents arrived?”
No answer.
Grace’s heart began beating harder.
Not because she was afraid of Ethan.
Because he had just made a mistake.
A real one.
He had answered a question containing information she had never given him.
Grace looked toward Rebecca.
Rebecca was already writing something down.
Ethan spoke.
“Grace.”
“Yes?”
“Come to the villa.”
“No.”
“There are things I can’t say over the phone.”
“Then say them to your attorney.”
“This isn’t about the company.”
Grace felt the room become still.
“What is it about?”
Another pause.
Then Ethan said four words.
“It’s about your father.”
Grace stopped breathing.
Declan straightened.
Rebecca looked up.
Grace pressed the phone tighter against her ear.
