I'D BEEN MARRIED JUST TWO DAYS WHEN MY MIL FIRED THE MAID, THREW ME AN APRON, AND ORDERED ME TO REPLACE

Daniel stared at me.

“You knew?”

“I knew your family finances were suspicious before the wedding.

I didn’t know you were involved until you started treating me like staff and leaving evidence everywhere.”

“You’re my wife!”

“That didn’t seem important when your mother was ringing a bell for me.”

Patricia stood abruptly.

“You can’t throw me out of my own home.”

Robert’s expression was almost pitying.

“This residence belongs to the trust, Patricia.

Your occupancy has always depended on trustee approval.”

Her lips trembled.

He slid another document forward.

“Given the misappropriation findings, that approval has been withdrawn.”

For the first time since I had met her, Patricia had nothing to say.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Emily, wait.

We can fix this.”

I looked down at his hand.

“Take your hand off me.”

He did.

Immediately.

Good.

“You deliberately misrepresented your finances before our marriage,” I said.
