I'D BEEN MARRIED JUST TWO DAYS WHEN MY MIL FIRED THE MAID, THREW ME AN APRON, AND ORDERED ME TO REPLACE

Daniel had borrowed against trust-owned commercial property to finance a failed cryptocurrency investment.

Patricia had covered his losses by moving funds between family companies.

They had assumed nobody would look closely.

Especially not Daniel’s obedient new wife.

Their arrogance peaked during a Sunday dinner.

Patricia had invited twelve relatives.

Halfway through dessert, she clicked her fingers at me.

“Coffee.”

I didn’t move.

She clicked again.

“Emily.”

One cousin laughed awkwardly.

Daniel whispered, “Just do it.”

I looked at him.

“Ask politely.”

Patricia’s face tightened.

“You live under my roof.”

“Actually,” I said, “according to county property records, this house belongs to Whitmore Legacy Trust.”

The room went quiet.

Patricia recovered quickly.

“And?”

“And nothing.”

I stood and poured the coffee.

She laughed, convinced she had won.

Later that night, Daniel cornered me upstairs.

“Don’t embarrass my mother again.”

“Or what?”

His expression changed.

“For someone who came into this marriage with much less than us, you’re getting very comfortable.”
