“I’ll take care of the house.”
I'D BEEN MARRIED JUST TWO DAYS WHEN MY MIL FIRED THE MAID, THREW ME AN APRON, AND ORDERED ME TO REPLACE
She had no idea how literally I meant it.
Part 2
For the next twelve days, Patricia became unbearable.
She rang a silver bell when she wanted coffee.
She deliberately dropped napkins beside my chair.
She invited friends over and introduced me as, “Daniel’s wife.
Very domestic.”
Daniel watched it happen.
Sometimes he looked embarrassed.
He never stopped her.
One morning, Patricia dumped a basket of clothes onto the kitchen floor.
“You missed Daniel’s gym shirTS.”
“I was working.”
She laughed.
“Working? On that laptop?”
“Yes.”
Patricia turned toward Daniel.
“Your wife still thinks she’s a career woman.”
Daniel barely looked up from his phone.
“Emily, maybe take some time off.
We’re married now.”
I stared at him.
“You told me you respected my career.”
“That was before we had responsibilities.”
Patricia nodded approvingly.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
