I worked two jobs to help fulfill my husband’s dream of becoming a doctor — at his graduation, he handed me divorce papers, but just as I was walking away, one of his classmates said, “Before you leave, there’s something you should know.”

He said all the sacrifices would be worth it someday.

I believed him.

A year later, we got married.

For the next several years, I worked constantly while Nathan focused on his studies.

Every exam he passed felt like something we’d accomplished together.

Then graduation day finally arrived.

I sat in the audience with tears in my eyes, watching Nathan receive his degree and thinking that everything we’d struggled through had finally paid off.

After the ceremony, he walked over to me with a smile and handed me a large envelope.

For a moment, I thought he’d planned some kind of surprise.

Then I opened it.

Divorce papers.

I looked up at him, completely stunned.

Before I could even ask what was happening, Nathan turned around and walked away.

I stood there holding the papers, barely able to process what he’d just done.

Eventually, I started walking too, even though I had no idea where I was going.

I hadn’t gotten far when one of Nathan’s classmates stepped in front of me.

He looked genuinely concerned.

Then he lowered his voice and said,

“Before you leave…

there’s something you should know.”
