Dominic.
The chair.
The bath.
The first half inch my leg had moved.
The terror of being treated like a burden.
“I spent my life thinking power meant never needing anyone,” I said. “Then I lost my legs and discovered I had built a world full of people who would obey me but almost nobody who would tell me the truth.”
Mara's expression changed.
Barely.
I continued.
“Your sister told me the truth before she had any reason to care whether I survived it.”
Tessa looked away.
Mara studied me.
Then she said, “She had a reason.”
I frowned.
Tessa went pale.
“Mara.”
“No.”
Mara's voice sharpened.
“He deserves this part.”
Something passed between the sisters.
I looked at Tessa.
“What part?”
Tessa's eyes filled instantly.
“Vincent…”
Mara answered for her.
“She wasn't assigned to your house by accident.”
“I know. She chose the case because of you.”
“No.”
Mara shook her head.
