I covered my face.
For years I had believed justice meant leverage.
Punishment.
Winning.
I had never considered that mercy could hurt more because it left you with nowhere to hide.
“Can I meet her?”
Tessa became very still.
“If she wants.”
“Not to apologize.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
“Why not?”
“Because an apology is something people like me use when we want the story to end.”
I picked up the documents.
“I'll give her everything.”
“Everything?”
“Pier Nineteen. Internal reports. Emails. Insurance communications. All of it.”
“Vincent, that could cost you—”
“I know.”
“Hundreds of millions.”
“I know.”
“Possibly the company.”
I looked at the signature at the bottom of the page.
“My signature did that to her.”
“No. Dominic lied to you.”
“And I built a system where his word was enough.”
Tessa said nothing.
I reached for my phone.
Called Lucia.
She answered on the second ring.
