I had no defense.
She continued.
“I took the assignment because I wanted proof. I thought I'd get inside your office. Copy something. Find something that showed you knew exactly what happened.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
She touched the pages.
“These.”
I looked at my signature.
“You're going to the prosecutor.”
“I already gave Lucia copies.”
I stared at her.
“When?”
“Before Dominic was arrested.”
A strange laugh escaped me.
“So Lucia knows?”
“Yes.”
“And she's been waiting for you to tell me.”
“Yes.”
I looked toward the parallel bars across the room.
Months ago, betrayal would have detonated in me.
I would have fired people.
Threatened people.
Destroyed whatever frightened me before it could expose weakness.
Now I simply asked, “Why did you stay?”
Tessa wiped her face.
“Because you weren't the man I expected.”
“Maybe I was worse.”
“No.”
“You just showed me a document that proves my negligence put your sister under concrete.”
