I felt the floor tilt beneath me.
“Why?”
Tessa's eyes filled.
“At first?”
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out another envelope.
Worn.
Creased.
She had clearly carried it a long time.
“I came here because of this.”
Inside were copies of emails.
Construction schedules.
Inspection warnings.
A memo stamped URGENT.
And at the bottom of the final page was my signature.
Vincent Anthony Corvino.
I remembered the day.
Dominic had brought me twenty-seven contracts during lunch.
I'd signed them between phone calls.
One of them authorized accelerated demolition at Pier Nineteen despite a recommendation for additional structural review.
I hadn't read the full report.
I had asked Dominic one question.
Safe?
He'd said yes.
I'd signed.
My signature could change a man's future.
Or a woman's.
I could hear Tessa breathing.
“I thought you knew,” she said.
I couldn't look at her.
“I should have.”
“Mara thinks you did.”
