“She tried.”
I looked up.
“Tried?”
Tessa squeezed water from the cloth.
“I called Dr. Patel myself.”
“You did what?”
“I told him you hadn't canceled anything.”
“You had no authority.”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because you told me yesterday you wanted to keep going.”
My voice came out lower.
“And if Arya fires you?”
Tessa shrugged.
“I'll find another family that hates me.”
A laugh almost escaped me.
Then she leaned closer.
Her voice changed.
“And Mr. Corvino… there's something else.”
The hair along my arms lifted.
“What?”
She glanced toward the bedroom door.
“I don't think your fiancée wants you to recover.”
Cold entered my chest.
“That's a serious thing to say.”
“I know.”
“You'd better have a reason.”
“I do.”
She reached into her uniform pocket.
Folded paper.
Three pages.
She placed them on the bed.
“I found this in the printer tray in the upstairs office after Mrs. Bellini asked me to bring down your insurance file.”
