Her Mother-in-Law's Call Turned the Baby Abuse Case Upside Down

But there was something else.

The officer told me that my husband had been making claims about what happened inside the house. He said investigators would need to compare those claims with the injuries, the statements, the scene, and anything else they could document.

Then the hospital social worker came in.

She explained that I did not have to return home that night and began asking about a safe place for me and the baby to stay. She also asked whether my husband had access to our money, our phones, our transportation, or anything else that could be used to pressure me into going back.

I realized how much of my life had quietly become organized around avoiding his anger.

The diapers had never been the real issue.

Neither had the formula.

Those expenses had simply become another reason he used when he wanted someone to blame.

Later that night, an investigator came to the hospital with additional questions. He told me that my husband was being interviewed and that his mother would also be spoken to about what she had seen and what she had said on the phone.
