The video showed Lily.
She was thirty-two weeks pregnant, wearing her soft blue cotton nightgown, barefoot, holding a glass of ice water in her left hand.
She looked exhausted, her hand resting over the high curve of her belly where baby Noah was moving beneath the fabric.
Then… from the shadow of the master bedroom doorway…
Stepped **Rachel Vance**.
She wasn’t wearing her funeral dress.
She wore dark gray surgical scrubs, black nitrile gloves, and held a small, spring-loaded auto-injector pen against her palm.
The church congregation watched in paralyzed, suffocated horror as Rachel moved silently across the carpet behind my sister.
Her hand came up.
The auto-injector slammed into the side of Lily’s neck:
*CLICK.*
Lily dropped the glass of water.
The glass shattered against the hardwood floorboards without sound on the video, but on the screen, you could see the sudden, catastrophic terror that flooded Lily’s face.
She reached for her throat. Her knees gave out. She tried to turn around, her mouth opening in an un-voiced, paralyzed scream:
Then stepped **Jason**.
He wore an unbuttoned dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
He walked to the edge of the stairs. He did not look angry. He looked clinical. Detached.
He leaned down until his face was two inches from my sister’s ear:
The audio feed engaged through the church’s structural subwoofers with deafening, concussive clarity:
*Jason’s voice:* **”You should have signed the Brazos lease over to the company, Lily.”**
*Jason’s voice:* **”Seventy million dollars is too much money for a country girl from Wise County.”**
*Rachel’s voice:* **”Do it, Jason. The paralytic has thirty seconds before the heart locks up. Push her now.”**
The video showed Jason’s gloved hands placing themselves firmly against the center of my sister’s shoulder blades.
He did not hesitate.
He shoved.
*CRASH.*
The screen went black:
`FEED TERMINATED // MOTION EVENT ARCHIVED`
CHAPTER 5: THE RECKONING IN THE AISLE
The sanctuary of Grace Baptist Church did not just erupt; it shattered into an arena of biblical, un-filtered rage.
My father let out an un-human, animalistic roar from the bottom of his lungs, his six-foot frame vaulting over the front pew with the velocity of an enraged silverback:
“YOU BASTARD!” my father bellowed:
He lunged across the aisle, his calloused, eighty-pound machinist’s fist driving through the air with enough kinetic force to pulverize an engine casing:
*KABOOOOM.*
His knuckles struck Jason square across the bridge of his nose:
*CRUNCH.*
The sound of cartilage exploding echoed off the stained glass like a dry pine branch snapping under an eight-ton truck.
Jason’s head whipped backward, his body flipping over the back of the second-row pew, crashing onto the wooden floorboards in a sprawling, bloody heap of flailing limbs and torn black wool:
*CRASH-ROAR-PANT.*
Blood sprayed across the white damask altar cloth and the petals of the lilies, bright arterial crimson against the pure white flowers.
“DAD! NO!” I screamed, lunging forward, catching my father’s arm: “Don’t do it! Don’t give them a way out! Let the law take them!”
Two Texas Department of Public Safety tactical troopers, who had been waiting in the rear vestibule, sprinted down the center aisle in full combat drysuits, their boots thundering against the wood:
*SLAM.*
They tackled my father with professional, restrained weight, holding him back against the communion rail as he wept, his face purple, tears and saliva flying from his teeth:
“HE KILLED MY BABY! HE KILLED MY GIRL AND HER BOY! LET ME BREAK HIS NECK! LET ME KILL HIM!”
On the floorboards between the pews, Jason was crawling on his hands and knees, spitting teeth and dark purple blood onto the red carpet runner:
“Help…” Jason gurgled, his nose smashed completely flat against his left cheekbone:
“Rachel… help me… call the governor… call my lawyer…”
Beside him, Rachel was backed against the pipe organ console, her eyes rolling back in her head, her hands clawing at her throat as if the succinylcholine were in her own veins:
“Daddy…” she whimpered, looking at Captain Vance:
“Daddy, please… it was Jason’s idea… he said we would go to Spain… he said the baby wasn’t his anyway…”
Captain Vance walked across the blood-splattered carpet.
He stopped two inches from his daughter’s trembling face.
He did not draw his weapon.
He reached down to his belt, pulled out a pair of heavy-duty, double-locking **Smith & Wesson stainless-steel transport restraints**, and ratcheted them around Rachel’s manicured wrists with two sharp, definitive snaps:
*SNAP-SNAP.*
“Rachel Vance,” Captain Vance said, his voice flat as an iron survey rod:
“You are under arrest for Capital Murder under Texas Penal Code Section 19.03.”
“And under the laws of this state…”
He leaned down until his breath washed over her tear-streaked cheek:
“…because the victim was carrying an unborn child over twenty-four weeks gestation…”
“…the charge… is a **Double Capital Offense**.”
“Which carries a mandatory minimum…”
Captain Vance pointed his finger toward the state penitentiary in Huntsville:
“…of death by lethal injection.”
Rachel let out an ear-piercing, suffocated shriek, her knees liquefying completely as two female DPS troopers hauled her upright by her Chanel lapels, dragging her designer heels through the blood and broken lilies toward the side exit:
*SCREEECH.*
