For four years my husband's family called me the walking credit card and ordered lobster every time I was at the table. At my father-in-law's birthday dinner I smiled, let all nineteen of them order, and then a waiter came out carrying a tray of nineteen separate checks.


PART 4 — WHAT THE CHECKS SHOWED

Nineteen folders went down that table and the noise stopped in about four seconds.

My nephew opened his first, because he is twenty-two and did not understand what was happening, and said "What's this?" fairly loudly.

Then everybody understood at the same time.

Briar looked straight down the table at me, and I looked back at her and did not say anything, because there was nothing to say that the folders were not already saying.

Torren said my name once, quietly.

Orrin Mallory opened his, found it was already settled, and put it down and looked at me for a long moment and then nodded at me. That is the entire reaction I got from my father-in-law and it is worth more than the eleven thousand.

And then the thing I did not plan for started happening.

Three people at that table could not pay.
