“What about you?”
“What?”
“Were you upset?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ethan rubbed the back of his neck.
“She told me she had lied about something.”
Lauren stepped forward.
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were sleeping with her, Ethan. She had just confessed she lied to you, then she crashed badly enough to nearly die. What did she say?”
“She said she needed to show me something.”
“What?”
“A file.”
“What file?”
“She wouldn’t say.”
“Where?”
“On her laptop, I think.”
“Where is the laptop?”
Ethan’s eyes changed again.
“I don’t know.”
Madison’s Mercedes had contained no laptop.
Detective Mitchell wrote something down.
Lauren watched Ethan.
“Did she mention me?”
His silence answered.
“What did she say?”
Ethan looked at the floor.
“She asked whether you still drove the Range Rover.”
Lauren felt Naomi turn toward her.
“What else?”
“That was it.”
“That was not it.”
“She asked when your next prenatal appointment was.”
