Her hand moved across her belly.
“I didn’t prepare for wanting the evidence to disappear.”
Hannah squeezed her hand.
Lauren’s phone vibrated.
Her attorney.
NAOMI PIERCE.
Lauren had called Naomi three days after receiving the photographs.
Not to file for divorce.
Not yet.
To understand where she stood.
Lauren answered.
“Naomi.”
“I got your message. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“You said emergency.”
Lauren glanced at Hannah.
“Ethan brought Madison Vale into my hospital tonight after a serious car accident.”
A pause.
“The Madison Vale?”
“Yes.”
“The woman from the photographs?”
“Yes.”
Naomi swore softly.
Lauren continued.
“There may be something else. Hospital security found a note with my name in Madison’s wallet.”
“What does it say?”
“I haven’t opened it. She’s unconscious.”
“Good.”
Lauren almost laughed.
Naomi and Lauren had been friends since college.
One became a surgeon.
One became the kind of attorney corporate executives hired when they wanted a problem handled before the newspapers knew it existed.
