Emily looked through the curtain.
The vehicle stopped outside their house.
A second black car pulled in behind it.
Her heart began pounding.
Noah whimpered.
Emily pulled him closer.
“It’s okay.”
She backed away from the window.
The front door didn’t open.
Instead, someone walked toward the porch carrying several grocery bags.
He placed them carefully beside the door.
Then he returned to the SUV.
Emily waited.
Nobody knocked.
Nobody shouted.
Nobody tried the door.
After almost a minute, the vehicles left.
Emily ran to the window.
She watched them disappear around the corner.
Then she opened the door.
Milk.
Bread.
Eggs.
Cereal.
Baby formula.
Fruit.
Canned soup.
Chicken.
Rice.
And a small envelope.
She opened it.
Inside was $100.
There was a note.
For emergencies. Not repayment.
Emily stared at it.
Then she cried.
Not loudly.
Just a few silent tears sliding down her cheeks.
For the first time that day, she could feed her brother.
